Double Day; Thinking Outloud

Today was an easy double day. Not really all that much, 60 minute ride in the morning and 30 minute run in the early afternoon. Good day, though my back is a little tight, need to start some regular stretching.

Yesterday was a 45 minute run. Also worked on updating my Canada plan based on some good feedback. Added rest days about every 10 days. Either completely off or easy spinning. Also added a bike block in mid may. Basically trying to do long volume 3 days in a row. Supposed to be a good plan to help build bike strength. I believe Lance Watson wrote about it in this month’s Triathlete mag, and my brother has been doing a Coast ride (from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara) weekend for years.

Just got a book called “Agents of Change“, the story of DC Shoes. I like reading and learning about the skate and surf companies. Most of them started from nothing, living in garages, to start a company around their passion. It’s good to have role models or examples of those who’ve succeeded in following their dreams and passions. Maybe in 20 years someone will write a book about Trifuel :)

Funny thing is I don’t skate, never have. I’ve surfed and love it… but I suck. I just like the culture in that they live to do what they love, not conform or buckle to social pressures. The philosophy is

Hey, I love to surf, so I choose a lifestyle that allows me to do that everyday.

What if we all had that mentally about health and fitness. Setting our priorities of health, fitness, Endurance Sports above money, success, material things. What would things look like then? Less obesity? Less stress? Less bumper to bumper traffic and wider bike lanes :) . Less new housing developments and more running and mountain bike trails :) . Instead of a new cell phone and mp3 player every year, invest in a coach or nutritionist.

Anyway, it’s Friday. Just thinking outloud.

Have a great weekend!

My Ironman Training Plan

This is my Ironman Plan for Canada, my first. I based it on the Half Plan on Trifuel along with some books I’ve read, feedback from my brothers, and my current strengths/weaknesses. This will most likely be a work in progress and I’ll continue to dial things in a bit. Still need to fine-tune those last few weeks.

I think it’s a good plan to start and I’ll evaluate each week and make adjustments.

My Training Plan

I’m posting it for easy access and to share with you guys to get some feedback.

Tough Ride

Went out for a quick 90 minute ride this afternoon. Was talking with a friend up here about Trifuel, his projects, and the sport in general. Then decided to ride together. I was a little hesistant because I know he’s much stronger than I. And I was right. I was working hard the whole time, gasping for breath while trying to keep the pace and hold my end of the conversation. I was fine on the flat stuff, but it’s those darn rolling hills that kill me.

Gotta keep at it though as Canada is going to be hilly and a real test on the bike… oh and the swim… and yes the run. :)

All in all a good ride and conversation. Hopefully by end of summer I’ll be able to hang without needing an oxygen tank and somebody circling back to pick me up!

Long Ride

You nourish your soul by fulfilling your destiny. - Author Not Sure

So, I got caught up in the Golf tourny on Sunday, looked at the weather forecast, and decided to swap my rest day. So rested on Sunday and moved my Long ride to yesterday as the weather called for 55 degrees and a sunny day. One the few days so far in the mid-fifties.

I ended up getting in 3 hours of riding. Wanted to go a little further, but was spent. A couple tough sections straight into the wind wasted me. I was pushing maybe 12 mph, yuck. That’d make for a long Ironman :) . But the positive is training in the wind and rolling hills should help increase my power output. Legs a little sore today, so just an easy run this afternoon.

It’s nice having a flexible schedule were I can just switch days if the weather calls for it and not have to worry about a boss.

I feel I’m really close to realizing one of my main goals in moving here to Bend. That being living a free’r/unbound/independent lifestyle. I’m getting pretty close to paying off all my credit card and car payments and bringing in just enough from my own projects to make ends meet. Do I miss some of the things the corporate life brought? Sure, on occasion I do miss the weekend golf trips with friends, the nice restaurants, being able to afford new gear. But then I remember the mounting debt, the long hours sitting in my car commuting, the 20lbs gained while sitting there swearing at the cars in front of me :) And I’m 100% certain I made the correct decision to pick up and leave. Knock on wood, I still have to continue growing and maintaining my current projects (e.g. Trifuel) and keeping my expenses low so affording a home and living a little more comfortably is possible. But, like I’ve mentioned before, it’s like the sport of Triathlon… It takes patience and persistence and 5-10 years down the road I’ll have built up a strong enough Base that doing an Ironman will be second nature. Ya right :)

Snow Run

The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. - Jack London

Well, I was looking forward to getting in a good long ride today. I woke, grabbed a drink of water, came back to the bedroom, looked out the window, and What the %#*%… Snow, about 3-4 inches and still falling. There goes my riding plans, so went back to sleep :)

Later that morning… Watched the Players Championship on TV, hoping for a break in the weather to at least go run. I lke watching golf now. Weird as I used to hate it when I was younger, couldn’t figure out why they’d put such a boring thing on TV for hours. Now I get caught up in the Tour and enjoy relaxing, reading, catching up on work, while watching golf on the Tely.

About 4pm… Can’t put it off any longer. Got bundled up and headed out for a run. Cold and wet. The snow stopped but the roads and trails a puddle fest with some light snow pack. Sixty-eight minute run. Knees ache now. blah.

Hoping for some heavy melt and drying up to save the weekend and get in the long ride.

Quik Post

Missed yesterday and want to try and create a habit of writing in the blog.

Yesterday I ran the River Loop run, about 60 minutes. Decent run. Today I headed out on the bike. Forgot to take any nutrition with me, stupid. Heavy winds and got fried by mile 20. Kept going and put in about 2 hours but didn’t get very far. Slow ride day.

On one section I was going down hill, slightly, against the wind and was only pushing 16-17mph. Coming home on that same section, slight uphill with wind at my back I was cruising at 25mph. Crazy wind. Hope I’m not too fried as I need to put in a long ride tomorrow. Hopefully 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

Remember to bring the calories :)

China Hill

New route today. Found a road that it a gradual climb for about 8 miles. Good, as I can stay seated the whole time and try to crank a higher (lower? I get confused, tougher :) ) gear and really work the legs. Only draw back was it was a little shorter than hoped, all around ride was 32 miles. Took fair amount of time because of the climb (and wind), but was hoping to get in 40 today.

But, when you’re close to home and you have to choose to ride for another 10 miles or turn in, especially on a cold day. You opt to turn in, or at least I do :) . That’s why I usually choose routes that take me far enough out that I’m not tempted at those critical times/mileage. Never loop back in at 30 miles. Twenty mile loops is o.k. because you’re just getting started and it’s easy to keep going, but 30-40 is tempting.

River Trail Run

Forty easy minute run this afternoon. The run felt good. Was able to keep my effort easy and HR lower than most of my previous runs this year. Wanted to ride today, but weather was poor again and there was some rain and little snow flakes falling. I guess I need to just suck it up and learn to ride in light rain. Will ride tomorrow.

A little brain dead right now. Been staring at computer to long. Time to eat and put it away.

Focus on Posture

Maintain focus on posture and form during your runs. Keep diaphram open and head up.

River Trail Loop

Sixty minute run today. Not feeling great, suppose could be due to staying up late and having a couple beers with dinner. Cold and overcast today, despite weather reports that it was supposed to be sunny. So glad I didn’t rely on them and switch my bike day yesterday.

Felt a bit heavy in the legs today. Neep a nap now. Didn’t sleep too well.

The run route is great though. I think maybe I take it for granted having been up here for more than a year now. But it doesn’t get much better than running on trails along a river. Or riding your bike (albeit cold) with snow capped mountains as your views. Definitely makes the rides more pleasurable. Plus NO allergies. Crazy, but come to think of it I can’t recall having any allergies since being here. As opposed to being miserable in the Bay Area.

Checked my log for the past 7 days (my training week - Mon to Sunday). 10 hours of training , 25 miles running and 100 and change riding (based on conservative estimates for 2 days on trainer). Obviously that needs to pick up a bit and will once I can ride outside more regularly. hard to do the hours on the trainer. Also need to get swimming, argh! I said I’d join the club last week. But haven’t yet. So hard for to depart with money. But gotta do it.
