Ya, now I remember why I have a hard time eating healthy. It’s so darn expensive. I’ve spent probably $150 bucks on groceries this week alone. Fruits are expensive. No more blueberries at $8, I think I need to stick to Apples and Bananas. Lean meat and Salmon is ridiculously priced, almost as bad as gas these days. The upside is I have dropped a couple pounds focusing on the fruits and vegies, but my bank account is slimming down as well
On the diet/nutrition plan, I think I’m getting it more dialed in (at least for my purposes). My energy levels during training are back up, I think I had a couple bad days early last week because I tried to cut out carbs from gains all together. Now I take in plenty in that training session window and recovery seems to be better. I still need to focus on getting a little more protein outside the window to help build muscle. I’ve always had a very difficult time putting on muscle, one of those body types with super skinny limbs but put on extra weight in the torso area. So I’m realizing to step up to the Ironman distance I absolutely must put on muscle mass, specifically in the legs to carry me through the event. Current chicken legs aren’t going to do it. Unfortunately more protein means more food/supplements and more expense. Man it’s cheaper being unhealthy, what’s up with that. The government should give healthy people a tax break to incent them to eat good foods and reverse the health issues we have.
Yesterday’s ride was brutal. Strongest winds I riden in since being here. Weather says 16 with gust of 30. It totally drained me and I didn’t get as far as I would have liked. Ended up doing about 3 1/2 hours.
Todays run was better, longest run yet of the year. 95 minutes and felt pretty good through 80 of them, then my legs got a little heavy and I could feel my form slipping a bit. I think it was mostly due to running into a friend at about 60 minutes and ran the next 15 a little too hard to keep up with him, then settled down again for the last 15 as he went his way and I mine.

Last night run sucked. I think primarily due to this new nutrition plan. I don’t think I’m getting enough carbs so bonked and was fried very early into a 45 minute run. I re-read portions of the Paleo book last night so will be making more adjustments and see if I can get this nutrition stuff dialed in. I need to reread a couple chapters tonight. Basically the carbs from grains are taken in pre and post workouts, and post workout broken into a 30 minute window immediately after workout and then a secondary window which is the duration of the session. So, my understanding, take in the 4/1 carb/protein ratio within 30 after to workout to get that immediate replenishment. Eating foods or supplements that are more quickly digestible. Then the second window would extend to the duration of the workout. So a 3 hour ride means a 2 1/2 window beyond the initial critical 30 minutes. In this window you can continue taking in grains as carbs for recovery but focus on the slower burning stuff, as well take in proteins, etc. But I believe this should be more meal based foods, not supplements/shakes/etc.
Anyway I’ll re-read the pre/during/post sections again tonight and clarify/fine tune some of this. At any rate, going through this process has definitely help me recognize the importance of nutrition and some of the no-brainer mistakes I’ve been making. Increases my awareness of what I’m putting in my body and what it does or doesn’t do for me.

I always have the toughest time titling (sp?) my posts. I think I’ve over used Run Day or Bike Day. So for today, no title until I can get a little more clever with them.
It can be tough keeping up with this. As with the title, the posts can seem redundant. I need to get a little creative to make posting fun and informative. So, what to do. Some steps. Read and learn from others. BBB, Lisa, Amber, Kylie all seem to be able to write long interesting posts while you, reader, are probably already bored with this one and are tempted to click the back button. TTW puts together well written and inspirational posts, while TGD posts witty posts about himself and fellow triathlete Robo-Stu. Maybe I’ll start posting the Adventures of Tribro and BigMatt, a Ren and Stimpy/Odd Couple insight into the life of two poor brothers TRI’n to make ends meet. One pro, one middle to back of the pack, both heading to Canada Ironman. Sharing some insights into each of our days.
I also finally decided to get a new phone plan. I still use my cell phone and number from Norcal. Time to get a local number and upgrade my 7 year old/1 hour battery life Sprint phone. So, just purchased a T-Mobile plan and paid a little extra for a phone with camera. I’ve been wanting to take some candid shots when I ride and run as the scenery here is awesome. Hopefully the pic quality on the phone will be adequate for posting in the blog here.
Yesterday 40 minute run. Today overcast and rainy so I did a 60 minute run. Legs super heavy when I hit the trails. A few rollers and I was feeling Sunday’s ride. While tribro opted to switch my bike/run day again - mister fair weather trainer. BigMatt went out at 9 this morning to put in 70 miles before heading to work. I’m finishing work now 7ish and BigMatt got off work at 6-6:30 and headed to the pool.
Going to do some reading now and put away the computer…

Had a weird night. My head got all congested and I was getting a little dizzy. This happened around the same time last year. At that time I went to doctors and it was sinus congestion and mild infection. So she perscribed some Nasal spray and the vist cost me $230. Ouch. Needless to say, I wasn’t going to do that again. So I got sme over the counter spray and some “Non-Drowsy” Nyquil to try and clear my head. Big mistake. I did get drowsy but at the same time a bit wired. I went to bed at 10 and didn’t actually fall asleep until 3:30. I also had to hit the restroom (#1) about every 30-60 minutes. Not sure why that was as I didn’t drink very much in the hours before bed. I then arose at 6:00 having to go #1 again. Sucks, this is supposed to be my long ride day.
I finally got out of bed around 8:30 as I couldn’t get back to sleep anyway. My head was still all foggy and I was dead tired. Went to get my morning coffee and something for breakfast, watched a little tennis and at around 11 decided I needed to at least try and do something before the day was wasted. I decided it’d be easier and safer to try my Long Run on 3 hours sleep than get on the bike. Besides, the winds were howling today
I had to take two more leaks within 30 minutes of the run, but my head was getting clearer and I was feeling much better. I did the River trail with some extra around the park. Felt pretty good most of the run. Was able to keep my heart rate down and didn’t bonk today. Ended up doing my longest run of the year thus far. Eighty minutes. A long way to go still but I feel good to be there with 5 months of training still ahead of me.
I think because I was cautious starting out on the run I really focused on keeping my strides short and my HR down. Often I let myself go and it catches up with me towards the end of the run with bonking. This time I maintained a steady pace the whole time and felt like I hit that running zone at about 60 minutes. The last 20 minutes felt pretty smooth.
Picked up some new cycling shoes today, Shimano’s. Not really happy with my Specialized. Hopefully will try them out tomorrow.

Well, I was looking forward to getting in a good long ride today. I woke, grabbed a drink of water, came back to the bedroom, looked out the window, and What the %#*%… Snow, about 3-4 inches and still falling. There goes my riding plans, so went back to sleep
Later that morning… Watched the Players Championship on TV, hoping for a break in the weather to at least go run. I lke watching golf now. Weird as I used to hate it when I was younger, couldn’t figure out why they’d put such a boring thing on TV for hours. Now I get caught up in the Tour and enjoy relaxing, reading, catching up on work, while watching golf on the Tely.
About 4pm… Can’t put it off any longer. Got bundled up and headed out for a run. Cold and wet. The snow stopped but the roads and trails a puddle fest with some light snow pack. Sixty-eight minute run. Knees ache now. blah.
Hoping for some heavy melt and drying up to save the weekend and get in the long ride.

Forty easy minute run this afternoon. The run felt good. Was able to keep my effort easy and HR lower than most of my previous runs this year. Wanted to ride today, but weather was poor again and there was some rain and little snow flakes falling. I guess I need to just suck it up and learn to ride in light rain. Will ride tomorrow.
A little brain dead right now. Been staring at computer to long. Time to eat and put it away.

Sixty minute run today. Not feeling great, suppose could be due to staying up late and having a couple beers with dinner. Cold and overcast today, despite weather reports that it was supposed to be sunny. So glad I didn’t rely on them and switch my bike day yesterday.
Felt a bit heavy in the legs today. Neep a nap now. Didn’t sleep too well.
The run route is great though. I think maybe I take it for granted having been up here for more than a year now. But it doesn’t get much better than running on trails along a river. Or riding your bike (albeit cold) with snow capped mountains as your views. Definitely makes the rides more pleasurable. Plus NO allergies. Crazy, but come to think of it I can’t recall having any allergies since being here. As opposed to being miserable in the Bay Area.
Checked my log for the past 7 days (my training week - Mon to Sunday). 10 hours of training , 25 miles running and 100 and change riding (based on conservative estimates for 2 days on trainer). Obviously that needs to pick up a bit and will once I can ride outside more regularly. hard to do the hours on the trainer. Also need to get swimming, argh! I said I’d join the club last week. But haven’t yet. So hard for to depart with money. But gotta do it.

today. Started out o.k. but then my heart rate climbed and my legs got heavy and tired. Or maybe it was the other way around. It was frustrating, and I’d complain, but it’s my own fault. Didn’t run enough this winter and I’m suffering because of it. I complained about poor running performance last year around this time, and I got my run in shape through the summer, but now have let it slide. Confident I can get it back up, up to the 1/2 marathon comfort, but this year I need to push myself to the full marathon.
I need to look into taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin again. My knees are bothering me and I took it a couple years back and remember feeling improvements in the pain in my knees. Maybe I’ll try the Cytosport Joint Matrix stuff and see how that helps.
Hoping for a good day tomorrow for riding. Was tempted to squeeze in my bike today as it was sunny this morning. Then it started to rain again so opted to play it safe. Didn’t want to get caught if it started snowing again. Weather says partly cloudy tomorrow and sunny on Sunday, so looks like I’ll be able to get a long ride in this weekend. Nice!

Wow, my second blog post of the day. I’m on fire
Well maybe not since the first was a recap of yesterday.
Went for a 45 minute run today. Super windy out here today, but at the I saw the sun. BONUS!
Unleashed the Blogs section on Trifuel and have been getting some great response so far. More than 20 bloggers already on the network. Looks like this is going to be a quick post. Dog is staring at me, moaning to go out. Until tomorrow…
